Frequently asked questions

  • Can I skydive?

Absolutely! We offer two training courses, AFF and the Category System, which will train you to skydive completely on your own! Finishing a skydiving course gives you your British Skydiving A Licence.

  • What's the difference between AFF and the Category System?

AFF is a faster and easier course, but more expensive, while the Category System is cheaper, but harder to pass. Which one you choose depends on your budget! Both courses have the option to pay-as-you-go, meaning you can try a few jumps and then stop if you decide it's not for you.

  • How much does it cost?

Go to pricing for the most up-to-date prices.

While initial training can be a bit expensive, you can jump for just £20 once you get your licence!

  • Where do we skydive?

Most of the time we jump at Skydive Langar, the UK's biggest dropzone, just a 30-minute drive from the main university campus. Sometimes we go on trips with British University Skydiving to jump at other UK dropzones and even abroad!

  • Is skydiving safe?

Yes! Skydiving is a highly regulated sport with abundant safety measures. If you do experience a parachute malfunction there are safety measures such as automatic activation devices (AADs) on parachute rigs which will automatically release a reserve parachute if you are unable to deploy your main parachute.

This article provides further information on safety in skydiving if you're curious: https://www.skydivelangar.co.uk/is-skydiving-safe/

  • What happens if something goes wrong with my parachute?

Your groundschool will teach you emergency procedures for dealing with malfunctions. Every parachute rig is equipped with a reserve parachute, which is specially designed to open without issues. All of Langar's rigs are looked after to the highest standard so you're in good hands!

  • How many jumps until I'm a qualified skydiver?

The number of jumps required varies on how current you are, but the average is around 25 for the Category System and 18 for AFF.

The more you come back and jump, the less time you'll have to lose muscle memory, so the quicker you can do it the better!

  • How long will it take me to get my A Licence?

It's completely up to you and the weather! Some people take a week, some take several months. You can go to Langar and make several jumps in one day whenever the weather allows, so it's really up to your schedule.

We recommend jumping as often as you can to start with so you don't lose the muscle memory.

  • Can I see the footage of my jump?

Yes! You can get footage from the instructor's perspective for free as part of your course!

  • How can I check the weather?

Weather plays a crucial role in skydiving, as we rely on clear skies and low winds. The wind limit is 18mph for students.

You can check the weather forecast on any reliable website, such as Metcheck.

  • How do I get to Langar and can I stay?

For your groundschool, we'll sort transport for you unless you let us know you'll get there yourself. It's free to camp at Langar and the club has tents, roll mats and sleeping bags you can use throughout the year if you ever want to jump more than one day in a row (or perhaps stay for drinks at the bar instead of driving home...)

  • How do I pay for everything?

For all purchases such as your membership, groundschool deposit, jump tickets and kit hire for experienced members, visit the UoNSU website and purchase the correct items through the products and merchandise page.

  • How can I arrange transportation to Langar?

You can join the Transportation - UoN Sport Skydiving Facebook group, where you can ask for a lift, or arrange a taxi with other members if there are no available drivers. Lifts to Langar are £2.50 each way, and you can pay by buying transport tickets through the UoNSU website.

Alternatively, you can take the train from Nottingham Station to Bingham and arrange a lift from there. Please remember to be respectful when arranging transport, and to buy transport tickets BEFORE you go!

  • Can I jump at other dropzones once I'm qualified?

Yes! Once you're qualified, you can jump at almost any skydiving dropzone worldwide. Skydiving offers a global community of dropzones to explore.
